Commercial Vehicle Issues
If you operate any of the following types of commercial motor vehicles (CMV) you must comply with the applicable U.S. Department of Transportation (USDOT) or Canada Motor Vehicle Transport Act (MVTA) safety regulations concerning:
- Drug and alcohol testing for all persons required to possess a Commercial Driver's License
- Driver qualifications (including medical exams)
- Parts and accessories necessary for safe operations
- Hours of service
- Inspection, repair and maintenance.
As well each State or Province will have specific guidelines for the operation of commercial motor vehicles within their borders.
How CMV driver offences affect your company
- Points are assessed on conviction; the points hit your company abstract and not the driver's
- The convictions stay on both the company and driver abstracts for a period specified by the provincial or state ministry or department
- In some cases if the driver is charged, the company can be charged with permitting the driver to operate in contravention of the specific act - thereby almost doubling the number of points you receive.
